Iconic chicken wings in SF! There can be a long queue but they move folks through at a pretty efficient pace. We had put our name down and there looked to be about 10 parties ahead of us (mostly groups of 2 with a couple parties of 6-8), and we were still quoted at only 30 mins wait, and we were called at almost 30 mins exactly. We ordered: - Original Dry Fried Chicken (Wings) - Dried Sauteed String Beans - Shrimp and Leek Dumplings - Black Bean Sauce Noodles LOVED the chicken wings, they came out piping hot and smothered in a sticky sweet + spicy sauce, and yet were still perfectly crispy with every bite. I also really enjoyed the shrimp and leek dumplings. Possibly because I was pretty hungry, but it was definitely helpful that they came out ahead of the chicken and so I was able to snack on some before the main star of the show. A little smaller than your usual boiled dumplings, but still juicy and filled well with a not too thick wrapper. The string beans were a little bit of a letdown for me this time. I usually really like this style of green beans, but this particular one was done in a sauce that kind of tasted like a slightly thinner, more soy sauce forward version of the chicken wings sauce. Which is to say that it was pretty sweet, and bogged down with grease/oil. The beans didnt have that signature crunch that you usually get with sauteed string beans. Lastly the black bean noodles: Similar to jajangmyeon, but the noodles have more of a house chow mein vs the slight qq in jajangmyeon. The waitress recommended the "black bean sauce" over the "dry black bean sauce" version because it "has more sauce". Which ended up being totally accurate so if that's what you're also looking for, then the non-dry version is the way to go! All in all, the chicken was a hit to try again after a long time away. Would probably skip the green beans next time unfortunately.
There is always a line out the door for San Tung so I knew I wanted to give it a try! When you walk in, there is a white board mounted on the wall to your right. You can add your name and the number of people in your party and when there is a table available, the waiter will call your name. We ordered: - Dry Black Bean Sauce Noodles: came with zucchini, squid and cucumber. The black bean sauce was really strong and not quite my taste but I think others would enjoy this. - Original Dry Fried Chicken (Dry) Wings: sweet, crispy, sticky - very good wings that live up to their reputation! - Hot And Sour Soup: this was not the best hot and sour soup. It was very light in color and I felt like it could've been way more flavourful. All in all, I felt like the food was fine but it was not worth the long wait. I would say you should try the famous chicken wings once!
Iconic chicken wings of San Francisco! The line outside always seems long but it's always worth it for these sticky sweet spicy wings. Though it's coated in sauce, it is still SOOO crispy! There's quite a few tables but it's always always packed. We came by around 5 pm for a table of 8 and didn't get seated for about an hour and a half? But once seated we got our food within 15-20 minutes as they fry everything once ordered! It's a cozy classic Chinese restaurant and always worth sitting down and eating the food fresh!
SAN TUNG LIVES UP TO THE HYPE!!! Their original fried chicken is a MUST-TRY, and for those who like that caramelized goodness, the fried dry beef is a close second. The string beans and black bean noodles were also great additions to the spread my table had going on. I left feeling more than satisfied and wished I lived in town to try more of their menu! There might be a wait to get a table because of how popular this spot is, but service is pretty fast and the delicious food makes it 100% worth it.
It took me WAY too long to finally come to this legendary Sunset staple! When people ask about the best Chinese food place in SF, this is one of the top places mentioned and it certainly deserves to be. Their main attraction is their Fried Chicken Wings and you could have an amazing meal by just ordering a table full of them! The sauce is so delicious and my only regret was not ordering more of them. We also tried the Shredded Pork with Garlic, which was good but probably won't order it again. Finally, we went with the Garlic String Beans as our veggie dish and they were some of the best I've ever had. Overall, it really did live up to the hype and even surpassed it! We went during a weekday for lunch so we were lucky to find a table quickly, but be prepared for a longer wait on nights or weekends. But no matter when you go, I'm sure you will leave with a full belly and a smile on your face like I did!
I really loved: $24 Honey Walnut Prawn $13 Pork Dumplings $20 Dry Fried Beef I loved: $16 Dried Sautéed String Beans $16 Black Mushrooms and Bean Curd $19 Satay Beef $15 Large Hot and Sour Soup I really liked: $16 Black bean noodles regular + $18 original dry fried chicken wings + $32 dollars a person with tip included. Actually insane #goodeats at the legendary San Tung. Honestly I remember these dry wings being way better but everything else here is so flavorful, I'm really glad we got to go here before I move away. Service is pretty good. They recommend we get the dumplings and I cannot believe we almost skipped on them. It's hard to get dumplings on a higher level than avg and somehow it just tastes better here. They're super busy so you will need to flag people down to help you but they'll get the job done once you do. It's a good volume in here, mostly a bunch of Asian people chatting while eating and having a good time.
First time finally eating at the restaurant after ordering to go for years to avoid the atrocious parking. The vibe is kind of chaotic restaurant in there with people walking in and out because it's so busy. I wanted to have the experience to eat at the restaurant at least once and there's nothing too special. The food, however, is worth it. My order: Dry Fried Chicken DICED* - this is their most popular menu item and I heavily recommend getting it diced if you love the crunch. Honestly, I also feel like they put a lot more sauce and thought into the diced version too. Veggie fried rice - Wanted to balance out the meat with this fried rice and it was delicious. Also, I don't like mushrooms, but they're on there and it's fine. Pork chow mein - to me this was so overwhelmingly garlicky that I didn't enjoy it as much as other places, but if you're into that, this is the plate to get.
I came back to San Tung for the first time after coming often as a kid, and it still held up! My coworker and I came for lunch and it was busy at 12pm on a Thursday. I put my name on the waitlist and had to wait for about 10 min before we were seated. Luckily we ordered soon after we sat down and the food also came out quickly. We got the dry fried chicken wings, pork and napa cabbage boiled dumplings, and the five spice beef noodle soup. The wings came out first and they were piping hot from the wok. They were fried super good and were crispy the whole time they were at the table even being covered in the thick, sweet and spicy sauce. They weren't jumbo, steroid chicken size, but they had good meat on them. The pork dumplings went very well with vinegar and chili oil. The wrapper was thin and chewy and the pork was flavorful and juicy. This was the most nostalgic part for me, just as I remembered from my childhood. The beef noodle soup came out last and I would probably skip this next time. The beef and tendons were very melt-in-your-mouth tender, but there wasn't too much of it. The bowl was mainly filled with their handmade noodles, which had a good bouncy texture, but I found the broth too plain to fully enjoy the noodles. The broth needed more depth and salt to give the noodles enough flavor. I did like the spinach on top to add some greenery to our lunch. Overall, I would only come back for lunch during the week to avoid the crazy long wait times, but the food does still stand up to the test of time. The service was actually better than expected, prompt but still friendly. I'm glad this spot is still busy as ever!
- dry sautéed string beans - pork dumplings - sweet and sour beef with brown sauce - pork potstickers - beef fried rice - dry fried chicken wings We got the usual line up, but have you tried the sweet and sour beef with brown sauce? I actually like it more than the chicken wings.
Wow! San Tung is the most popular Chinese restaurant in San Francisco on Yelp, it currently has over 8,100 reviews! I've been wanting to try this place out for almost 6 years! I found out about it on Yelp when one of my friends reviewed it. My boyfriend and I had a San Francisco date a couple of months ago and we spent the day at Golden Gate Park, I saw on a map that San Tung wasn't too far away, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go for dinner. We arrived about 20 minutes before the dinner portion opened, there was already a line formed outside and by the time it was 4:30pm on a Saturday, the line had gotten super long, so make sure you plan ahead. Luckily, they opened the doors a couple of minutes early and I was surprised how fast they were at seating everyone. We ordered the Original Dry Fried Chicken Wings which everyone on Yelp was raving about. These were amazing! it was sweet, spicy and tangy! We also got the Honey Walnut Prawns which were delicious, along with Hot and Sour Soup. Everything we ordered was perfect! I'm super impressed how efficient their staff works. Even though the doors were supposed to open at 4:30pm, we were already seated and had ordered by 4:28! haha They brought the food out for all the tables so fast as well, and by the time we finished our food, they were on it to provide us with takeout boxes and our check. They know their restaurant is popular, so they have methodically thought out how to flip tables fast which is great! I highly recommend San Tang if you're looking for great Chinese food in the city.
